Flights of Fancy 2003

Selected Works

This work is part of my Liquid Light series that was inspired by my research into organisms, terrestrial and marine, that are bioluminescent.

Jellyfish give off a bioluminescent glow when disturbed. This enzyme, one of a group called luciferases (lucifer means “light bearer”), produces a highly energised molecule that quickly releases its energy as light—but as of yet, nobody had been able to isolate it from the jellyfish.

Fascinated by these creatures and the ephemeral nature of light, I wanted to capture the fleeting nature of the unseen things in the dark.

(My apologies for the low res images as the original photo’s were destroyed in my studio during a flood.)
